SMELLS LIKE VICTORY - BP sponsorship of British Museum ends after 27 years!
Maybe LondonRT being dragged backwards by our hair down the front steps was worth it after all these 18 years, nearly decades! After multiple audacious artistic actions, people-powered performance protests and tireless campaigning from SO many people, BP’s sponsorship of the British Museum’s exhibitions is OVER! This is a HUGE win for the movement for fossil free culture and everyone who has played a role in this campaign initiated by our Art Not Oil campaign. 14 leading UK institutions - including the Tate, the National Portrait Gallery, the Royal Opera House and the Royal Shakespeare Company - have now cut their ties to fossil fuels since 2016. We know BP’s sponsorship of the arts was never about philanthropy: it was a cynical strategy to “artwash” its toxic reputation and advance its destructive business but - creative protest, people power and solidarity have turned the tide! Now, the pressure is on the Science Museum [5] which is still partnering with BP, as well as the oil and gas firm Equinor and the coal-producing conglomerate Adani. https://twitter.com/drop_BP/status/1664659019359825921 and
